Differences between Creativity and Innovation

Meet the difference between creativity and innovation, and learn how to implement them into your business.

One of the best ways to stand out our business is Innovating or developing a Creative process. Still, many business owners and managers are, at some point, confused about what means an Innovative or Creative process, and why these elements are crucial for their business plan. Why are Creativity and Innovation Important?

Nowadays, Creativity and Innovation are what makes some businesses more successful than others. Because your customers don't buy your product or your service, they buy all that your business or brand means. If you are doing something different, excellent or unexpected behind the doors, this will be reflected and makes the difference in your business over others'. But to reach this point, a Creative and Innovation process is crucial.

"Learning and Innovation go hand in hand. The arrogance of success is to think that what you did yesterday will be sufficient for tomorrow." - William Pollard

What is Creativity?

According to Oxford, Creativity is "the use of imagination or original ideas to create something.". So, you could say that it is quite hard to be creative because of that meaning. Original ideas are like miracles appearing once in our lifetime, like Ford, Internet or Smart Devices. That is why expanding our research and observing how the world really works, we found that Creativity is not just original or new ideas. Creativity can also be the method of how we generate or adapt applicable ideas to other processes, products, things, or our daily-live routine.

For example, let's say that you woke up this morning with the desire of changing your routine. Still, you didn't know how to do it, so you start asking your friends and colleagues about how is their daily-life in order to choose those habits suitable for your routine. That is Creativity, take some ideas or part of them and put them together to create something different.

Ask your employees or colleagues how they would improve the service, there you will get heaps of ideas to start your creative process.

What is Innovation?

On the other hand, the meaning of Innovation in the Oxford Dictionary is "the act of making changes in something established, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products.". And because of this kind of definition, we get confused between Creativity and Innovation, constantly interchanging both definitions in our business processes.

Then, for us, a clear definition of Innovation is "the application of the result of a creative process". That means that after you develop a creative process, and you did find the best ideas according to your objectives, the stage where you apply those ideas is called "Innovation".

How to know if you are innovating?

To know if you are innovating in your business, you should have present that Innovation is, first of all, a change already done and working. Then, it must always be measurable and observable. Every change you do in your process without applying it or not be able to be measured is Creativity.

To finalize, and summarize, an Innovation process can be described by the practice of questioning the normality, generating creative ideas in order to find an applicable change, which results must be visible and measurable.
